What Is Entity Mapping?

Entity mapping names the things that define a brand. It then shows how the business, its services, its people, and its topics should connect.

Entity mapping names the things that define a brand. It then shows how the business, its services, its people, and its topics connect. The result is a practical map for pages, links, and structured data.

What an Entity Is

An entity is a thing that can be identified on its own. A business can be an entity. So can a person, service, product, place, or topic. Entity mapping gives each important thing one clear name before connecting it to anything else.

A Worked Entity Mapping Example

Imagine a fictional company called Harborlight Solar. Its homepage calls the business Harborlight Solar. The About page calls it Harborlight Energy Group. The service page never says which company provides residential solar installation in Jacksonville. The same business now looks like two companies with one disconnected service.

The Entity Mapping Process

  1. List every entity the website names. Start with the business and its people. Then add services, products, places, and important topics.
  2. Choose the supported name and page that owns each entity.
  3. Record the relationships the visible pages actually support.
  4. Mark every conflict, missing connection, and unsupported inference for review.

Sample Entity Map Output

  • Core entity: Harborlight Solar, the name used on the homepage and contact page.
  • Service entity: Residential solar installation, owned by the service page.
  • Place entity: Jacksonville, supported by the service area and contact details.
  • Confirmed relationship: Harborlight Solar provides residential solar installation in Jacksonville.
  • Conflict to fix: Harborlight Energy Group appears without an explanation or a declared relationship.
  • Unknown relationship: The website does not show whether Harborlight Energy Group is a parent company, former name, or separate business.

Facts And Inferences Stay Separate

A useful entity map does not turn a likely connection into a fact. Harborlight Solar and Harborlight Energy Group may be related, but the website has not shown how. The map records the uncertainty and identifies the page that should explain it.

What Changes After The Map

The map gives the website a repair plan. Page titles can use the supported business name. Service pages can name the provider and location. Internal links can point to the page that owns each subject. Structured data can then describe the same relationships a person can read.
